Flavours of Matosinhos and Canning History Celebrated in Memorable Community Event

Matosinhos hosted a unique and memorable celebration. Students, firefighters, fishermen, scouts, parish priests, municipal police officers, and local government representatives gathered for a community lunch under the motto "Flavour is our North". This event, part of the "Europe in my Region" project, aimed to highlight projects financed by the European Union in the citizens' home regions.
This lunch, promoted by the Pinhais Cannery, the European Commission, and the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N), sought to underline the importance of the Northern Region and involve the Matosinhos community. This was not just a celebration of the remarkable local gastronomy, but also of culture, history, and community spirit.
The event highlighted the Pinhais Cannery through its most recent project, the "Pinhais Canning Factory Tour". This guided tour allows visitors to explore the company's heritage and the canning industry of Matosinhos. This tour, focusing on the unique experience of the Pinhais Cannery, highlights its artisanal method and century-old building, features that confer a unique historical character to the space.
Visitors are guided by cultural mediators on a journey to the past, to the roots of Pinhais and all its brands. The tour culminates with a tasting of Pinhais delicacies and a visit to the shop, where canned goods and collector's items can be found. In the near future, the Museum plans to host temporary exhibitions, educational services, and workshops, expanding its cultural and educational offering.
Combining cultural and historical tourism with gastronomic tourism, the "Pinhais Canning Factory Tour" is an inclusive experience for all age groups and of particular interest to both the local community and foreign visitors.
To mark the event, participants received a special edition label for Pinhais canned goods, designed by a Matosinhos student who won the "Flavour is our North" Drawing Contest. This moment perfectly symbolised the spirit of cooperation and community that the event sought to promote.
