Matosinhos strengthens ties with Galicia at the Xantar 2022 International Gastronomic Tourism Fair

10 Novembro 2022

Matosinhos confirmed its growing relevance in gastronomic tourism by being recognised at the 23rd Edition of the Xantar 2022 International Gastronomic Tourism Fair, which took place in Ourense, Spain, in November 2022. This participation further consolidated the geographical and cultural proximity between Matosinhos and Galicia, a relationship that has been deepened over the years.

With a larger stand than in previous editions, Matosinhos made a strong presence at what is considered the largest international event of gastronomic tourism on the Iberian Peninsula. This participation resulted in the Best Promotional Action in Tourism award, an expressive recognition of the city's dynamic promotion.

The gastronomy of Matosinhos, with emphasis on the "Matosinhos World's Best Fish" brand, has been captivating the Spanish audience, who are a constant presence in local restaurants throughout the year. The geographical proximity between Matosinhos and Galicia facilitates this cultural and gastronomic exchange, creating an increasingly stronger bond.

This participation in Xantar 2022, and the award won, are a reflection of the recognition from the Spanish public, reinforcing Matosinhos as a gastronomic destination of choice for this audience. In addition, activities such as showcookings by Chef Hélio Loureiro and tasting moments enriched the visitors' experience, allowing them direct contact with the rich gastronomic tradition of Matosinhos.

Matosinhos's historical and cultural connection to the Ways of Santiago de Compostela was also highlighted, especially in the Xacobeo Year. Matosinhos, due to its link to the Legend of Cayo Carpo and the scallop of Santiago de Compostela, has become a mandatory stopover for pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela along the Portuguese coast, recording continuous growth in visitors every year.

Matosinhos's presence at Xantar 2022, and the award received, underscore its commitment to promoting its rich gastronomy and its territory, in line with its aim to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This recognition reinforces Matosinhos's position in the national and international tourism and gastronomic scene and highlights its ability to establish strategic partnerships with neighbouring regions, such as Galicia.
