'WORLD FOOD DAY: MATOSINHOS ENGAGED CHILDREN IN SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH THE “FOOD OF THE FUTURE” WORKSHOP

On the past World Food Day, an initiative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Matosinhos organised the "Food of the Future" workshop, aimed at children. This educational event sought to raise awareness among children about the importance of sustainability, in the context of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The workshop encouraged young people to think about the amount of resources required to produce food and clothing, translating the small steps that make them up into ecological value. As part of this activity, students had the opportunity to learn about and try alternative high-nutritional-value foods, such as crickets, mealworms, and grasshoppers. Moreover, they tasted innovative products like larva lollipops or cricket muffins.
This initiative was a significant step in raising children's awareness about the importance of sustainability and the role each person can play in achieving the SDGs. Matosinhos is committed to promoting behaviour change for sustainable development, strongly investing in education as a privileged tool in this mission.
The "Food of the Future" workshop is an example of Matosinhos' strategy, which aims to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This initiative reinforces its commitment to working towards the SDGs, promoting education for sustainability and encouraging the adoption of greener behaviours.
The event also illustrated Matosinhos' intent to put education and sustainability at the centre of its concerns, showing its commitment to UNESCO's values and determination to become a city that is an example of sustainability, innovation, and creativity."
