TECMAFOODS, A BEACON OF INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN MATOSINHOS

Tecmafoods, an innovative company based in Matosinhos, is setting new standards in the food and agro-industrial sector with its pioneering approach to insect production and their transformation into food ingredients, fertilisers and other agro-industrial applications.

With a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation, Tecmafoods is dedicated to utilising food by-products discarded by the food industry and retail to create new protein through insect production. The larvae they produce (Tenebrio molitor) feed on these by-products, transforming them into protein and organic fertiliser.

Tecmafoods' approach is making a significant impact on environmental, economic and social levels. In addition to producing more protein and fertilisers, the company also minimises resource consumption, particularly of water, and avoids the production of greenhouse gases. This initiative promotes the fight against food waste and anticipates a response to the predictable food scarcity, producing and making available for consumption what is not being used.

Such innovation is a clear example of the business dynamism present in Matosinhos, which stands out in addressing major contemporary themes, such as sustainability and innovation in food. The Councillor responsible for the Economic Development Areas of the Municipality, Marta Pontes, recently visited Tecmafoods' facilities, where she praised the company's innovative work.
