New mural joins national Industrial Tourism itinerary

The work of women in the canning industry in Matosinhos and their contribution to the local, regional and national economy were recognized through the creation of an artistic mural at the entrance to the Docapesca facilities.
The initiative was launched by the City of Matosinhos and ANICP – National Association of Fish Canners, and reflects the identity and heritage of this industry and the women who worked and work in it.
The construction of the Leixões harbour at the end of the 19th century was fundamental for the development of the canning industry in Matosinhos. The sector experienced significant growth during the two world wars, reaching its peak between the 1940s and 1960s in terms of both production and exports. The 70s and 80s were decades of decline for the sector, leading to the closure of almost all the canning factories that operated in the municipality. Of the 54 units that existed, only three remain in operation. They are: Conservas Portugal Norte, Lda., Pinhais & C.A Canning Factory and Ramirez & Cª Canning Factory.
The mural can be seen until June 16, near the entrance to Docapesca on Rua Heróis de França, in Matosinhos. Admission is free.
The Mural in Homage to Women in the Canning Industry is part of the third edition of the National Agenda “Discovering Industrial Tourism”, a kind of itinerary of places and experiences associated with the living industry and industrial heritage in Portugal, with visits to factories in operation, museums and spaces that tell the story of the evolution of Portuguese industry, discovering the techniques, machinery and know-how of productive activities up to the present day.
In the case of Matosinhos, in addition to the mural, it is possible to visit other places, which you can check out at https://www.matosinhoswbf.pt/p/turismoindustrial
